El Firal de Sant Feliu de Pallerols

Description

In the beginning of the 15th century, El Firal was a place where the University of La Vall had its meetings, many of which are considered very important historically, for its relation with the Wars of the Remences. The area was known as “the square of the field” or the “green square”, since it was an area where there was a big field, very near the sagrera (old quarter clustered around the churc), but outside the city walls. The image of El Firal in Sant Feliu de Pallerols has its origin in the first three decades of the 20th century, when a spring was installed, banana trees were planted and a pavement made of paving stones was built. Nowadays, it is a square where public events are celebrated: El ball dels Cavallets, Gegants and Mulassa, are traditional types of dancing held in June and August. In 2010, these dances and also the village festivity were reassessed by the Generalitat de Catalunya as a “Traditional Festivity of National Interest”. El Firal was the original place where the traditional Santa Llúcia fair was celebrated, which gathered many people. In the summer, it is an ideal place to enjoy the social life of the town.
