Sant Vicenç church

Description

Sant Vicenç church is a Romanesque building located right in the centre of Besalú. Apparently, it may be the first church built in the town, since it was already mentioned in documents dating from the year 977. The temple has a basilical plan with three naves and a slightly pointed barrel vault, a transept and three semi-circular apses. As compared to the side naves, built with a half-barrel vault, the central one is slightly heightened. The main façade is the part which retains most interest, boasting a Gothic large rose window. On one of the side walls there is an extremely well-preserved Romanesque gateaway dedicated to Sant Rafael. On the inside, there is the Gothic tomb of Pere de Rovira, who, in the 15th century, brought the relics of Sant Vicenç.
