Besalú Medieval bridge

Besalú's Medieval bridge is dated in the 11th century, although some historians belive that, back then, it did not have the present shape. It is believed that, in 1315, it was gravely affected by a flood. It was rebuilt thanks to the toll imposed by James II. The bridge has seven spans forming an angle according to the support possibilites by the large river stones. It is 105 metres long and 30 metres high; it also has a tower. In 1385 in order to pass the bridge it was necessary to pay the price of passage or toll. In 1881 the tower and the gateway no longer existed and during the Spanish civil war it was blown up with dynamite and later rebuilt by the architect Pons Sorolla.
