Description

In 1229, the King James I notified officials and Jewish community of Besalú the prohibition of loans to 20%. In 1244, they ofers protection, and in 1264 gives to the Jewish community the privilege to build a synagogue. This synagogue, along with the mikvah became one of the most important buildings in the call. This building was composed of the prayer hall, with a gallery exclusively for women, located on an upper floor; the courtyard, where the community gathered not only for religious purposes but also to mediate problems related to the aljama or community; the school where Hebrew language and Jewish history were taught; finally, the gate to access the mikvah, where the purification baths were celebrated.
