Clock tower

Description

The clock tower in Castellfollit de la Roca, located in Sant Roc square, was built thanks to Mr. Lluís Pons i Tusquets, a monarch and possible member of the Catalan Courts in the 1919 elections. He had promised the construction of the tower, as long as the inhabitants of Castellfollit de la Roca voted him. After being elected, he kept his word and ordered the construction of the tower. On 13th June 1924 the building permit was requested. In August the building began and in 1925 it finished. The total cost of the tower went up to 4,499 pessetes – the equivalent of 27 euros!! The tower was dedicated to Sant Roc, and therefore, beneath the clock, there is his image with an engraving at the top: 1885. In that year a cholera outbreak spread across La Garrotxa. People feared getting infected and prayed to Sant Roc in the middle of the square named after him. Since in Castellfollit de la Roca the cholera did not have the same impact as in other areas of the county, they decided to dedicate the tower, built years later, to this saint.
