Jonquer House

Description

Jonquer House was the home of many important characters connected with the medieval history in La Garrotxa, as well as in Catalonia. Its origin dates from March 1284, when Ramon of Sant Romà married his daughter Sibil·la with Arnau of Jonqueres, and he gave them the lands of Planes d'Hostoles as a wedding present. At the end of the 18th century, the Jonqueres and Sant Romà families were distinguished knights who had taken part in conquering Valencia, on the side of King John I, or also people who had been important in the courts, such as notaries. One of the most relevant characters of the family was Maria of Jonqueres, kidnapped by Alfons of Aragon, duke of Vilafermosa and count of Ribagorça, and illegitimate child of John II. Although they never married, they had two children who were accepted by the King John II as his own grandchildren.
