Montsacopa volcano crater

Description

The name of the volcano comes from the cup-like form of the crater (the ‘copa') and its location at the summit of the volcanic cone. Its shape is the product a Strombolian eruptive event (relatively low-level), and another Phreatomagmatic (highly explosive) eruption, between 30,000 and 100,000 years ago. This crater is unique in the Natural Park of the Volcanic Area of La Garrotxa, as it has retained its circular structure and has been left undamaged by post-eruptive lava flows. The cone has a diameter of 120 metres and is 12 metres deep.
