Monument to Xiruca

Description

The author of this sculpture is Manuel Solà and it was in 2008 when it was placed in front of the factory in which the typical Catalan espadrille of the brand “Xiruca” was made. A symbol of the local industry and craftwork, it is represented by three vertical spoons and two baskets filled with espadrilles. This work of art is made of stainless steel, copper, bronze and stone; it is over 7 metres high and weights around 2 tonnes and a half, and wants to be a tribute to the ingenuity of those entrepreneurs who gave birth to most of the industrial activity in the municipality. This type of footwear, made of recycled rubber, was created by the Fontfreda Castañer family in the fifties and was exported all over the world.
