Sant Andreu de Gitarriu church

Description

Sant Andreu de Gitarriu church is located in the village of Sales de Llierca and, today, it is a suffragan hermitage of Sadernes parish. The first documented reference of Sant Andreu de Gitarriu dates from its consecration act, in 1225. It is a Romanesque building of a single rectangular nave with barrel vault and a semi-circular apse to the east. On the western wall, there is a belfry with a single opening. Its structure is simple and quite typical of the late 11th and 12th centuries, since it is made of ashlars. During the 13th century, a sacristy was added, pursuant to the general order which protected the clergy from the epidemics. As a film based on the novel La punyalada, by Marià Vayreda, was filmed there, the inner walls were covered with gypsum, respecting the remains of paint and the reddish colour which can still be appreciated.
