Sant Julià church – old hospital

Sant Julià church-hospital was founded in the 12th century by the counts of Besalú and it formed part of the former Benedictine monastery founded in 977. It was built to give shelter to the pilgrims and, although it did not properly work as a hospital until the 14th century, the Benedictine monks had always looked after the walkers who crossed the town, since this is an essential rule in the Order of Saint Benedict. The façade is the only part that is left. It is formed by a gateway, six degradation arches and four capitals, three of which represent animal figures. The fourth one, decorated with acanthus leaves, is Corinthian style. At the beginning of the 20th century, the building became a hospital again and it is now a sociocultural centre.
