The lime trees tower

Description

Ignasi Dusol Martí and Pere Dusol, father and son, established in 1866 the textile industry of Filatures Dusol, although, apparently, the origins of the company dated from 1840 and 1850. Later, it expanded its production line and used a steam engine as the source of energy: apart from dye, cotton and wool spinning the company also worked with wooden materials. The factory was built at the same time as the colony, with the labourer's homes and other infrastructures such as La Económica Planense cooperative. This complex was called the Factory Street and, unfortunately, it was recently demolished in 1988. According to documentary sources, in its golden age, at the beginning of the 20th century, 200 people were employed there. Pere Sacrest, the owner, built his house close to the factory and the colony. It was composed of a private house, the tower, a house for the servants and a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The construction, dating from 1912, was designed by Enric Sagnier (1858-1931) an architect from Barcelona who also built the Tibidabo, the Temple del Sagrat Cor or La Nova Duana, among other buildings. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) the Republican General Líster stayed established the military quarters there for a few days. Before leaving, though, he burned down the building. Apparently some neighbours tried to extinguish the fire and therefore the structure of the tower could be saved, but no the inside. Once the war was finished, the tower was reformed and practically rebuilt. In 1977 the building was reformed. A hall was added and the old football field and sauna were turned into a car park and an office. If we take a look at the servants' house, we will see two windows in the shape of eyes. It is a complex surrounded by gardens with centenarian trees and, since 1998, it also hosts weddings, business conventions and other celebrations. It has also been the setting of several film shootings such as Les veus del vespre, a 2002 film by Salvador Garcia Ruiz that tells a love story set in the 50s, or Spanish movie, a 2009 Spanish comedy. The building has three floors and it is Modernist style with eclectic elements, such as the historic Arabian and classic elements and typical Modernist elements: vegetable slim representations in the forging of the windows, green-red-black glazed ceramics, etc.
